Every year United Van Lines conducts their annual United Van Lines 46thAnnual National Movers Study based on mover data revealing where Americans moved and for what reason.
California, you kept us busy this year with one of the highest outbound states. The Golden State was among the top 10 outbound states, both in quantity and percentage of outbound vs inbound moves. Main reason noted for most moving out of California was due to Family reasons, followed by individuals moving out as a result of their job.
The top outbound states for 2022 were:
- New Jersey
- New York
And to which states were California residents moving? Our Los Angeles Agency, Allstate Moving Systems, saw the majority of interstate moves headed for Florida, Texas, Idaho, Tennessee and Colorado. According to United Van Lines National Movers Study below are the top 10 highest inbound states in 2021 based on National Mover data.
The top inbound states of 2022 were:
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
- North Carolina
- Washington, D.C.
- South Dakota
- New Mexico
Of the top ten inbound states, four — Vermont, Oregon, South Dakota and New Mexico — are among the least densely populated states in America, with less than 100 people per square mile. South Dakota and New Mexico are among the top 10.
